the country's patriarch, a senior government official
said, dismissing charges the move was made under
pressure from authorities...
Patriarch Abune Antonios was removed from his post
by the Synod of the Orthodox Church earlier this month,

first official confirmation of the sacking....

The Rev. Gary Safrit, a Lutheran pastor who paints
religious icons in the tradition of the Eastern
Orthodox Church, will visit Lenoir-Rhyne College
Feb. 3-5...
He learned to paint icons by studying with monks and
iconographers in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Icons are more than paintings, said Safrit in a
1998 article in "The Lutheran" magazine.
They are a point of connection. They are holy places.
He explained that icons are designed to stimulate
interaction between a worshiper and the figure depicted
in the painting, whether Jesus, Mary or a saint...
